Kabuki Woogie is devoted to a variety of kabuki-related subjects. It began with a series
of essays, including photos and videos, of a research trip to Japan in 2010, subsequently
added my 25-chapter history of the first Kabuki-za, and then began a series on Japanese
books about kabuki from my collection. It will soon add occasional essays by
guest contributors based on papers they delivered at conferences and
symposiums. One can poke around in its archives to find all of these past
posts.
Entry #8 in
Kabuki
Woogie’s coverage of Japanese books on kabuki from my private collection is
Hatsudai Matsumoto Hakuō no Sekai, a memorial volume (boxed) devoted to the late Matsumoto Hakuō I (1910-1982), known for the greater part of his
outstanding career as Matsumoto Kōshirō VIII. The name Kōshirō was ranked as
the highest in its family line for many years but Kōshirō created another name
for himself so his son, Ichikawa Somegorō VI, could become Kōshirō IX in 1981. Kōshirō
IX
did
the same thing in 2018, when he took the name Matsumoto Hakuō and his son,
Somegorō VII, became Hakuō II.
The book contains photos of Hakuō in performance, articles
about him, and a substantial number of his watercolors. There is also a detailed
chronology of his entire career.
